A little closer to the extraordinary
North Macedonia travel guide: cities, lakes & local flavours
A walk through an old bazaar, a long lunch with local flavours, an afternoon beside a lake: North Macedonia rewards travellers who leave room for more than a checklist. Use this guide to choose the places and experiences that fit your interests, then explore our private walking tours or tell Lide & Maria what you have in mind.
Start with a private city walking tour
Our listed walking tours focus on Skopje, Ohrid, Bitola and Kratovo. They offer different ways into Macedonian history, architecture and daily life, with guiding in English, Spanish or French. Explore the itinerary and estimated group price on each tour page, then send an enquiry for your preferred date.
Skopje: the Old Bazaar, Stone Bridge & city stories
Start in the capital with Skopje Fortress, the Old Bazaar and Macedonia Square. A guided walk helps connect the Ottoman streets, religious buildings and more recent city landmarks, rather than treating them as separate photo stops. Our Skopje walking tour also shares the stories of Mother Teresa and the 1963 earthquake.
For a longer stay, leave a separate day for the surrounding landscape. Matka Canyon and Vodno offer a different setting from the city centre. Transport and any activities should be arranged separately from the walking tour.
Ohrid & Struga: lakeside holidays with a cultural heart
Ohrid combines old-town lanes, artisan workshops, an ancient theatre and views across Lake Ohrid. Our private Ohrid walking tour reaches the Church of St. John at Kaneo, with time to understand the places along the way. The UNESCO-listed Ohrid region is a natural choice for travellers who want history alongside their lake holiday.
Struga offers another base on Lake Ohrid, with the Black Drim river running through town. Allow time to enjoy the waterfront instead of trying to combine every lakeside stop in a single afternoon. Swimming and boat outings are separate activities, subject to local conditions and availability.
Bitola: Shirok Sokak, cafés & the City of Consuls
Bitola suits visitors who enjoy architecture, café life and the stories behind a city street. Our walking tour follows Shirok Sokak, Magnolia Square, the Clock Tower and the Old Bazaar, exploring the mix of European and Ottoman influences. Heraclea Lyncestis and Pelister are ideas for separate visits beyond the listed city walk.
Kratovo: stone bridges, towers & local traditions
Kratovo is a quieter alternative to the larger cities, with stone bridges, historic towers and streets shaped by its volcanic landscape. Our walking tour explores the town's mining heritage and the tradition of Kratovo crushed salt. Wear comfortable shoes and leave time to enjoy the details of the old town.
Prilep, Kruševo, Resen & the Pelagonia region
Prilep is associated with the rocky landscape of Markovi Kuli, while Kruševo brings mountain-town streets and the Makedonium memorial into a cultural itinerary. Resen is a gateway to the Prespa area. Together with Bitola, these places offer different reasons to explore Pelagonia rather than make only a brief stop in the region.
If your route continues through Demir Hisar or Makedonski Brod, allow time for the countryside between towns. Share the places that interest you when requesting a custom itinerary. Destinations outside our listed walks need an individual availability and route check.
Tetovo, Gostivar, Debar & Kičevo: western Macedonia
Tetovo's Painted Mosque is a distinctive cultural stop, while Gostivar connects a western route with the wider Polog area. Debar and Kičevo can form part of a journey through western Macedonia, depending on your arrival point and where you plan to stay.
Think of this region as a route to plan carefully, rather than a list of places to rush through. Mountain roads and longer distances between stops can change what is comfortable in a day. Ask about a custom cultural itinerary before assuming these places are included in a city walking tour.
Kumanovo, Kriva Palanka & the northeast
Kumanovo, Kriva Palanka and Kratovo offer an alternative route through northeastern Macedonia. Travellers interested in archaeology may also wish to research Kokino, while those drawn to religious heritage can consider the monasteries of the wider region. These visits need their own transport, opening and access checks.
A northeast itinerary is a useful idea for a return visit or a slower cultural trip. Choose a small number of stops and leave space for a local meal, rather than measuring the day by how many towns you pass.
Štip, Kočani, Berovo & the eastern towns
Eastern Macedonia can add a different rhythm to a trip. Štip is associated with pastrmajlija, Kočani with its rice-growing region, and Berovo with mountain scenery and the surrounding Maleševo area. Pehčevo is another place to consider when planning time in the east.
Vinica, Delčevo, Makedonska Kamenica, Probištip, Radoviš and Sveti Nikole can be discussed as part of a more personal route. Start with your interests, food, a family connection, history or a particular landscape, so the itinerary has a purpose beyond collecting place names.
Veles, Tikveš & the Macedonian wine country
A journey through the Vardar region can connect Veles with Kavadarci, Negotino and Demir Kapija. The Tikveš area is an important name in Macedonian wine, and Vranec is a red grape variety to look for when learning about the country's wine traditions.
Our food and wine experiences are tailor-made on request. Tell us whether you prefer local cooking, a winery visit or a combination, and we will discuss what can be arranged. Winery appointments, transport, tastings and prices must be confirmed individually.
Strumica, Dojran & the southeast
Strumica offers a base for exploring the southeast, with the wider region including the Smolare and Kolešino waterfalls. Lake Dojran brings a lakeside setting to a different corner of Macedonia. Treat a waterfall walk and time by the lake as separate activities when planning your day.
Gevgelija, Bogdanci and Valandovo may fit a southern route depending on your arrival and onward plans. If you are combining North Macedonia with Greece, ask about the Macedonian part of your itinerary and check the cross-border arrangements separately.
Lakes, canyons, mountains & time in the sun
Macedonia is landlocked, so a holiday by the water means lakes and rivers rather than a sea coast. Lake Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran offer different settings, while Matka Canyon is a well-known nature escape near Skopje. Mavrovo Lake adds mountain scenery to a western route.
Mavrovo, Pelister, Galičica and Šar Mountain are places to research for nature-focused travel. Choose walking routes that match your experience and the conditions on the day. For a relaxed summer holiday, balance sightseeing with shade, breaks and time beside the water. Water activities and mountain guiding are not automatically included in our city tours.
Macedonian food: ajvar, tavče gravče, burek & more
Food connects a Macedonian trip to everyday life. Look for tavče gravče, the slow-baked bean dish. Ajvar, a roasted-pepper spread. Shopska salad. Flaky burek. And pastrmajlija. Regional variations and family recipes are part of the pleasure of eating your way through the country.
Our traditional Macedonian food guide introduces dishes to try, and our private culinary experiences can be requested for a more personal food journey. Tell us about dietary requirements before we plan an experience so we can check what is possible.
Include North Macedonia in a Balkan itinerary
North Macedonia borders Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece, making it a possible part of a wider Balkan journey. You might make Skopje a city stop, spend more time around Ohrid, or add a Macedonian food and wine experience between other destinations.
Book Your Macedonia focuses on experiences within North Macedonia. Share your arrival point, departure point and available days when asking about your visit. We can discuss our part of your trip without assuming that international transport, accommodation or guiding in neighbouring countries is included.
Plan around your interests, not a packed checklist
For a short visit, choose a city walk and leave time for a meal or a nearby outing. With more days, combine Skopje and Ohrid with a stop that reflects your interests: Bitola for city culture, Kratovo for a smaller historic town, or a tailor-made food experience.
When you enquire, include your preferred dates, group size, guide language and the places you most want to see. Our listed city walks are private experiences. Availability and the final price are confirmed by Lide & Maria after you send your request.
